SOUTH JERSEY SCRUB
April 6th- 14th 2019 Thank you to all of our Scrub Captains, volunteers, and partners. We are excited to start planning for next year’s South Jersey Scrub. Please continue to submit trash hotspots so we can add them to our list
About the Scrub
Scrub: a strategic, organized cleanup initiative that targets a particular watershed, county, or region. A scrub is a way for people to take action together in one or more individual cleanup events over a period of time, for big impact. A scrub can last just one day or several months!
Why a Scrub?
Look, litter is everywhere… in our neighborhoods and our rivers, marshes, and bays. By 2050, scientists say there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Fortunately, with dedicated volunteers, this is a problem we can do something about! The ‘scrub model’ is a fun, effective way to mobilize people and neighborhoods, and get’er done!
Why South Jersey?
We know there are different interpretations of what “southern” New Jersey is, or if central New Jersey even exists (it does). This spring, our partners are gathering to remove trash from Trenton down to Cape May. These Delaware River Watershed communities are particularly important because of their coastal tributaries and marshes.

Our Inspiration
Schuylkill Scrub
In 2009, the need for a more cooperative watershed-based approach to solve the problem of litter and illegal dumping was identified by partners in the Schuylkill River Watershed, known as the Schuylkill Action Network. This need was addressed by encouraging more groups, and an increased diversity of groups – civic, business, youth, non-profit – to participate in local cleanup events and submit cleanup data through the collaborative “scrub”- aptly titled the Schuylkill Scrub. This watershed-wide cleanup initiative takes place from March 1st through May 31st. In 2017, more than 28,000 volunteers participated in 1,752 cleanup events in the seven counties surrounding the Schuylkill watershed, removing 784,035 pounds of trash and collecting 2,587 tires. The purpose, framework, and success of this cleanup is the inspiration for the South Jersey Scrub. Learn more at schuylkillscrub.org !
